A dissertation is a long piece of writing on a particular subject, especially one done in order to receive a degree at a university. A dissertation is usually done over a period of several months and must be defended in front of a panel of experts in the field. In the United Kingdom, doctoral dissertations are usually written in English and are between 80,000 and 100,000 words long. The first step in writing a dissertation is to choose a topic. The topic must be one that is researchable and that you are interested in. Once you have chosen a topic, you will need to do a literature review, which is a survey of the existing scholarship on your topic. After the literature review, you will need to formulate a research question and develop a methodology for answering that question. Once you have done all of this preliminary work, you can begin writing your dissertation. The first section of your dissertation will be the Introduction, in which you will state your research question and describe your methodology. The following sections will be the literature review, the body of your dissertation, and the conclusion.
